Not sure, but I doubt the fax needs the whole phone line for itself when using it (or at least that's the case when using a separated fax device, not sure when using a fax software), so was all of your dial up connections (internet connection too) disconnected when you tried that?
If there's some connection oddly holding you could try to reset the modem by using HyperTerminal and entering ATZ!. (When the New Connection box pop ups, click Cancel) |

Yeah you can view all used ports with a basic netstat command in cmd too, but I think the main issue is that the dial up connection was already open when you tried those softwares, you should let the fax software open the connection.

Not sure is Serial Port Monitor able to show the app but it checks is the com ports open and is there any traffic etc. if that helps at all.
![]() Edit: Portmon is what you need. It shows the process too. |

Are you sure you've selected the correct com port?
I use Norton WinFax, and it works great. I also have DSL, and fax over the same phone line (while it's NOT being used for a phone call, of course). |

When's the last time you used the modem to dial out? Maybe it got zapped by lightning.?
Have you gone to Phone and Modem options in the Control Panel, and tested it? (modem properties -> diagnostics -> query) Try moving it to a different slot, if you can. |

There may be a slight chance too your local firewall blocks serial ports (COM ports) and therefore windows thinks they are used in another app because the ports are shut.
